The largest undertaking commissioned by the Puerto Rico Port Authority (PRPA), RBR was chosen to complete the reconstruction of runway 10-28 of Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. This $17,976,652.00 job included the demolition of the existing connectors and taxiways, stabilization of the foundation and replacement of base and sub-base by removing 3 feet of existing unsuitable material and replacing that with gavion stone and recycled material.

In an green-inititive/recycling effort, all demolished concrete was crushed, sorted and processed and reused as the runway base and sub-base. The project's scope of work also included all new storm sewer system under the taxiways and connectors using reinforced concrete pipelines varying in size between 18" to 60" with headwalls and manholes.

An excellent example of RBR's ability to adapt and overcome project-specific issues was our solution to the concrete supply problem. Local supply could not meet the needs of our project so the decision was made to buy our own concrete central-mix batching plant that produced 250 CYD per hour of concrete. This enabled us to complete our project ahead of schedule since we controlled the concrete supply.

RBR was awarded the award for the Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Project of the Year by the Colegio de Ingenieros y Agrimensores (College of Engineers & Surveyors) of Puerto Rico for our outstanding work on this large-scale airport rehabilitation project.
